WHY do vacuum belts NEED Changed if they're not broken?
You have to stretch a new flat belt to install them on your vacuum. Each day your belt is in a stretched position, it loses elasticity. Think of your belt as a rubber band that has been stretched and left in that position for a few months. Even if your vacuum cleaner is never used, the belt is losing elasticity. Every day your belt will work slightly less efficient as the day before. Eventually, it will only pick up hair and light dust and won't be strong enough to agitate the carpet and pull the heavy, sandy, gritty soils to the surface of the carpet fibers. After 6 months the brush-roll really starts to slow down. It may even stop spinning completely when the vacuum cleaner nozzle is lowered onto the carpet. Routinely check your belt after the 6 month mark to ensure proper cleaning.
