The flat belt should be replace once or twice per year even if you don't use the machine. The belt is stretched when it is installed and after a few months it loses elasticity and will start to slip. This belt turns the pump. The cogged or geared belt goes from the pump to the brushroll. If the flat belt is slipping it will not be turning the pump motor fast enough for proper water pressure and also will not spin the brushroll fast enough to thoroughly scrub the carpet fibers. Feel the difference between the old belt you take off your machine and the new one. You will notice the old one is longer than the new one.
The cogged or ribbed belt does not stretch like the flat belt and should be replaced whenever the cogs or ribs get worn. It is a good idea to occasionally clean hair a debris from around this belt so it doesn't build up and ruin the gear on the pump.
